Anthropic says Claude is adding 1 million users daily as US government labels company a ‘national security risk’

Downloads of Anthropic’s AI chatbot Claude have increased sharply on mobile app stores, according to new data from analytics firm Similarweb. The AI chatbot recorded a 55% week-over-week jump in downloads as of March 2. According to the data, average daily downloads rose to about 337,200 compared with roughly 217,000 the previous week. The surge comes amid the company’s fallout with the US government and the Department of War labelling it as a ‘nation security risk’.

Claude’s mobile downloads rise sharply

Data from Similarweb shows that downloads of Claude on iOS and Android increased significantly in the week ending March 2. Average daily downloads rose to 337,200, compared with about 217,000 daily downloads the previous week. This represents a 55% week-over-week increase.During the same period, downloads of ChatGPT declined slightly by 5.6%, although its overall numbers remain much higher. ChatGPT recorded about 2.2 million daily downloads during the same week.

Claude daily active users hit new high

Claude also saw strong growth in user activity on mobile devices. The chatbot reached an average of 9.4 million daily active users for the week ending March 2, which is 26% higher than the previous week, data shows.On March 2 alone, Claude recorded 11.3 million active users, the highest daily number for the platform so far.Traffic to Claude’s website also rose significantly. According to Similarweb, Claude recorded 290.3 million web visits in February, up 43.1% from January, when the platform had about 202.9 million visits.While traffic to ChatGPT declined 6.5% month-over-month, the platform still recorded a much larger 5.4 billion web visits in February.

Company reports strong user growth

An Anthropic spokesperson said more than one million new users are joining Claude every day. Ryan Donegan, a spokesperson for the company, told Forbes that each day since early last week has set a new sign-up record for the chatbot.Anthropic also reported that the number of free active users on Claude has increased 60% since the beginning of the year, while subscriptions to its Claude Pro and Claude Max paid plans have doubled during the same period.The chatbot recently became the No. 1 free app on the U.S. iOS App Store, rising from No. 42 in early February.Earlier this week, Anthropic introduced a new feature for Claude that allows users to import conversation data from other AI chatbots.The feature lets Claude learn a user’s preferences based on previous interactions with another chatbot. Anthropic said this could help users move their data and continue conversations more easily.The company announced the update as competition between major AI chatbot platforms continues to grow.
