Swara said, “I can’t believe it. To be honest, the Taliban are one of the most despicable specimens of humanity. Ruthless and cruel, absolutely monstrous. This is an insult to humanity and the religion they claim to represent. Absolutely disgusting.” Her remarks came after reports claimed that the new law allows a husband to physically discipline his wife under certain conditions, as long as there are no broken bones or visible wounds.

The alleged provision has triggered widespread criticism from human rights activists across the world. According to emerging reports, the new penal code introduces strict conditions regarding domestic violence complaints. It allegedly states that a husband can beat his wife provided there are no serious visible injuries and punishment would apply only if serious harm, such as broken bones or open wound is proven.

These reported provisions have intensified concerns about women’s rights in Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power. Since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan, multiple restrictions have reportedly been imposed on women’s education, employment, mobility, and public life. International organizations and activists have repeatedly raised alarms over the deteriorating condition of women’s rights in the country.

The new penal code controversy has further fueled global debate about governance, human rights, and gender equality under Taliban rule. This is not the first time Swara Bhaskar has spoken strongly on political or social issues. In 2021, she criticized both Taliban extremism and what she termed “Hindutva terrorism,” tweeting that moral values should not depend on the identity of the oppressor or oppressed. The statement sparked significant backlash on social media and led to heated debates.
