A man was arrested for allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at Sam Altman<\/a>\u2019s home and then threatening to burn down OpenAI<\/a>‘s San Francisco headquarters on Friday, April 10, police said. An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the attack in a statement and said, \u201cEarly this morning, someone threw a Molotov cocktail at Sam Altman\u2019s home and also made threats at our San Francisco headquarters. Thankfully, no one was hurt\u201d OpenAI spokesperson Jamie Radice said, \u201cThe individual is in custody, and we\u2019re assisting law enforcement with their investigation.\u201dAltman, 40, lives in San Francisco and his OpenAI is also headquartered in the city. According to a post by San Francisco Police Department on X, formerly Twitter, officers responded to a fire at Altman\u2019s North Beach residence after a man threw an \u201cincendiary destructive device\u201d at his home at around 4 a.m. The device caused a fire on an exterior gate and the suspect fled on foot. About an hour later, officers responded to a man threatening arson at the AI company\u2019s office, recognizing the person as the same suspect from the attack at Altman\u2019s home, according to the statement. Officers then detained the 20-year-old male suspect and arrested him.<\/p>\n On April 10, 2026, at approximately 4:12 a.m., San Francisco Police officers responded to a North Beach residence regarding a fire investigation. At the scene, officers learned that an unknown male subject threw an incendiary destructive device at a home, causing a fire to an exterior gate. The suspect then fled on foot. There were no injuries reported as a result of this incident.The suspect’s description was broadcast to all officers.At approximately 5:07 a.m., SFPD officers responded to a business on the 1400 block of 3rd street regarding an unknown male subject threatening to burn down the building. When officers arrived on scene, they recognized the male to be the same suspect from the earlier incident and immediately detained him.Through the course of the investigation, officers developed probable cause to place a 20-year-old male under arrest.Charges are still pending at this time.While an arrest has been made, this remains an open and active investigation.
