Father recalls girls’ final warning over Korea obsession

GHAZIABAD: The father of three minor sisters who died after allegedly jumping from the balcony of a ninth-floor flat in Ghaziabad said his daughters had told him they could not give up Korean online content and gaming, remarks he recalled after police recovered a suicide note from the spot.The incident occurred around 2.15 am on Wednesday at Bharat City Society under Teela Mor police station limits in the Sahibabad area.

The deceased have been identified as Nishika (16), Prachi (14) and Pakhi (12), daughters of Chetan Kumar, a resident of Ghaziabad.A distrot Chetan Kumar said to reporters, “They had told me, ‘Papa, we cannot leave Korea. Korea is our life. Korea is everything to us. You cannot separate us from it. We will give up our lives.’”“I didn’t even know which games they were playing or what kind of tasks were involved. If we had known, this wouldn’t have happened,” he said, urging parents to closely monitor their children’s online activity.An eyewitness, Arun Kumar, told news agency ANI that he saw the girls jump from the building. “They were sitting on the balcony glass. It happened very suddenly around 2 am. From what I saw, one of them appeared to jump first and the others fell while trying to save her,” he said, adding that he immediately informed the police and called an ambulance.Police said all three girls suffered fatal injuries after falling to the ground floor and were rushed to a hospital in Loni, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.ACP (Shalimar Garden) Atul Kumar Singh said preliminary investigation suggests the sisters were addicted to a Korean task-based interactive ‘love game’, and family members had objected to their excessive mobile phone use in recent days.DCP Nimish Patil said the girls were heavily influenced by Korean content and had spent long hours on their phones, particularly since the Covid-19 pandemic. “Mobile phone usage had been restricted for the past few days, which may have caused distress. The investigation is still at an initial stage,” he said.Police said the girls’ education had been irregular and that they had not attended school for the past two years. The family has five children — four daughters and a son — and all members lived together. The incident took place late at night after other family members had gone to sleep.During the probe, police recovered a diary containing material related to the incident. A note inside read, “Read everything written in this diary, it is all here,” along with a crying-face emoji and the message, “Sorry papa, I am really sorry.”Police said the exact circumstances leading to the deaths are being investigated and statements of family members are being recorded.
