After 10 years, Amazon may make a big change to its biggest sale of the year, Prime Day sale – The Times of India
Amazon is reportedly planning to hold its annual Prime Day sale earlier than usual this year. According to a report by Bloomberg, the online commerce giant may move the sale to June instead of July, when it is usually held. The report cited people familiar with the matter. “The change will affect both Amazon and its constellation of third-party vendors, which count on the discounting surge to attract shoppers,” it said. Amazon first launched the Prime Day sale in 2015. The event was introduced to attract new Prime members who pay an annual fee for benefits such as shipping discounts, video streaming and other services.
Why Amazon may move Prime Day sale to June
As per the Bloomberg report, the shift in timing could affect Amazon’s financial reporting, as sales from the Prime Day event would be recorded in the company’s second-quarter results instead of the third quarter. The annual sale is also seen as an indicator of consumer spending trends. Amazon extended its Prime Day sale from the usual two-day event to a four-day event, giving shoppers more time to browse but also reduced the sense of urgency to make purchases in the moment. During last year’s four-day Prime Day event, online spending across retailers rose 30% year-on-year to $24.1 billion, according to data from Adobe Inc.. Because of its scale, the event is often used to gauge consumer demand and broader shopping trends, particularly during periods of economic uncertainty.Another possible reason could be the overlap of Amazon’s Prime Day sale with events from Walmart Inc. and Target Corp (Flipkart’s Big Billion Day sale in India). “For retailers, summer is one of the most important periods because consumers are doing their back-to-school shopping. It’s also an opportunity to build loyalty among customers ahead of the year-end holiday season,” the report stated.
