Neena Gupta, known for her versatile performances across arthouse and commercial cinema, won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for portraying a young widow in Woh Chokri and later for her role in Uunchai. 

Veteran actress Neena Gupta recently revisited a nostalgic moment from her career, recalling the first television serial Dard, which she both acted in and produced in 1993. Taking to Instagram, the actress reflected on how the show became an important milestone in her journey. She also shared a short glimpse from the serial, accompanied by its title track playing in the background, giving fans a throwback to the memorable show. “The first serial I acted in and produced in 1993 for Doordarshan,” Neena captioned the post.

Featuring Neena Gupta alongside Kanwaljeet Singh, Shagufta Ali, Manohar Singh and Jatin Prithviraj Kapoor, the show revolved around Radha, a wealthy and unmarried woman haunted by a mysterious past. The narrative explored the emotional turmoil she carries from earlier years and how it continues to affect her present life. 

Through Radha’s journey, the serial portrayed pain, resilience and personal strength as she struggles to confront memories and move forward. Neena Gupta, known for her performances in both art-house and mainstream cinema, later earned the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as a young widow in Woh Chokri and for the film Uunchai.

She appeared in several television films, including Lajwanti and Bazar Sitaram, with the latter earning her the National Film Award for Best First Non-Feature Film of a Director. She also acted in the television series Saans and hosted the show Kamzor Kadii Kaun. Internationally, she featured in films such as Gandhi (1982), portraying Mahatma Gandhi’s niece. Her other notable appearances include Merchant Ivory productions like The Deceivers (1988), Mirza Ghalib, and Cotton Mary, showcasing her work across television and global cinema.

Personal And Professional Front

Neena Gupta also left a mark on Indian parallel cinema with films such as Mandi, Rihaee, Drishti, and Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda. Her performances strengthened her standing alongside arthouse contemporaries like Rekha, Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil, and Dimple Kapadia. In 2018, she experienced a career resurgence after playing a middle-aged pregnant woman in the hit comedy-drama Badhaai Ho.

Neena Gupta and Sanjay Mishra are currently receiving widespread appreciation for their performances in their latest film, Vadh 2. Directed by Jaspal Singh Sandhu, the movie was released in theatres on February 6, 2026. Since its release, Vadh 2 has been drawing positive responses from audiences, with many praising the film’s gripping storyline and the lead actors’ powerful performances.

The actress’ personal life reflects resilience and independence. She later married chartered accountant Vivek Mehra, but earlier had a widely discussed relationship with former West Indies cricketer Vivian Richards in the late 1980s. Though Richards was already married and they never tied the knot, the two share a daughter, designer Masaba Gupta, who was born in 1989.
