Sridevi Wanted Janhvi to Become a Doctor

During an appearance on the talk show Too Much with Kajol and Twinkle, hosted by Kajol and Twinkle Khanna, Janhvi opened up about her mother’s strict stance. She revealed that Sridevi was extremely protective and believed the film industry was too harsh for her daughter. Janhvi shared, “My mother, being an actress herself, was very protective of me. She was very strict. She thought I was naive and wouldn’t be able to survive in Bollywood.”

According to Janhvi, Sridevi actually wanted her to pursue studies and become a doctor instead of entering films. She said, “She would tell me, ‘I don’t want to see you become an actress.’ That phase was very difficult for me.” While Sridevi initially opposed the idea, Janhvi eventually convinced her parents with the support of her father, Boney Kapoor. Her Bollywood journey began in 2018 with the romantic drama Dhadak, directed by Shashank Khaitan.

The film starred Janhvi opposite Ishaan Khatter and was the Hindi remake of the acclaimed Marathi film Sairat. Dhadak performed well at the box office and earned Janhvi the Zee Cine Award for Best Female Debut, marking a strong start to her acting career. Just months before her debut film released, Janhvi faced a heartbreaking loss. Her mother Sridevi passed away on February 24, 2018, in Dubai.

At the time, Janhvi was only 20 years old, and the tragedy deeply affected her life and career. Despite the emotional setback, she continued working and gradually established herself as a versatile actress. After Dhadak, Janhvi Kapoor took on several challenging roles that helped strengthen her reputation in the industry. In 2020, she portrayed an Indian Air Force pilot in Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl. Her performance received widespread praise and earned her a Filmfare Award nomination.
