Drunk youth drags cop on Mercedes bonnet for 800m in Telangana; arrested

HYDERABAD: A drunk youth has been booked for driving a car in a rash manner, ramming another vehicle and speeding away even as a policeman was clinging onto the bonnet in Gachibowli on Saturday. Police have also slapped an attempt-to-murder case against him. A video of the policeman on the bonnet of the moving car went viral on Sunday.The erring driver, G Tarun, 24, a resident of Narsingi, was arrested and sent in judicial custody on Sunday, the Gachibowli police said. Incidentally, it was the youth’s birthday on Saturday. His blood alcohol count (BAC) was 160 mg/100 ml against the permissible limit of 30 mg/100 ml.

Around 10.30 am, the youth, who was cruising in his Mercedes Benz in Nanakramguda area, rear-ended a car, lost control, hit a road divider and escaped from the spot. On seeing this, a home guard alerted the police control room, which in turn alerted policemen deployed on the route to stop the vehicle.“A traffic policeman first tried to stop him at Gachibowli Crossroads, but he escaped. Later, when he reached IIIT junction, constable E Narsimhulu tried to stop him. By slowing the car, the accused gave an impression that he was halting the vehicle, but suddenly slammed the accelerator pedal. As the vehicle was about to hit him, Narsimhulu jumped onto the bonnet,” Gachibowli inspector K Balaraju told TOI.Despite noticing that the constable was on the bonnet, the accused drove the car dangerously, in a zig-zag fashion, for about 800 metres. On seeing the car going berserk, a few motorists and bikers intervened after the accused took a U-turn. Finally, the accused was caught by the public and he was handed over to police.Narsimhulu escaped with minor injuries, police said.During the investigation, police learnt that the accused started partying from the early hours of Saturday. In the morning, he was on his way to his friend’s house when the accident took place.“The accused went to the US to pursue MS, but returned to India after discontinuing his studies,” the inspector added.Police registered two separate cases – for hitting a car and attempting to murder the constable.
