Veteran actor Annu Kapoor has strongly supported the Centre’s new guidelines regarding the national song Vande Mataram. The government’s recent directive makes it mandatory to sing all six stanzas of the song at government functions, schools, and official events, a move that has sparked fresh debate across the country. Reacting to the controversy, Annu Kapoor described the decision as wonderful and said he has been advocating for it for over three decades.

Speaking on the issue, Annu Kapoor said, “A very good decision. This is a wonderful, amazing decision. And was it made today? I have been chanting Vande Mataram for 32 years.” He added that Indians living abroad, especially in cities like New York, New Jersey, and California, greet each other with Vande Mataram, claiming that he has been promoting the slogan for years.

Kapoor also recalled an incident during a 1994 shoot in Dubai when some people reportedly objected to him singing patriotic chants. He stated that he stood firm in his belief and declared that he would continue to sing Vande Mataram regardless of opposition. Annu Kapoor emphasized that Vande Mataram is an immortal composition by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. He spoke in detail about the meaning of phrases like Sujalam Sufalam, explaining that they reflect prayers for righteous deeds and moral conduct.

According to Kapoor, the essence of the song is not just patriotism but a call for ethical living and accountability before the Motherland. He stressed that the song should not be viewed through a narrow religious lens. The actor also spoke about India’s linguistic and spiritual heritage. Referring to Sanskrit literature including epics like the Mahabharata and Ramayana, Kapoor said India’s philosophy promotes peace and non-violence.

However, he added that peace must also be protected with strength, drawing parallels with the teachings of Lord Krishna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. As per the new government directive all six verses of Vande Mataram will be sung in schools and government programs. The song will be presented before Jana Gana Mana. It is mandatory for attendees to stand in attention while it is sung but cinema halls are exempt from this rule.
