The actress opened up about this painful experience in an interview, recalling how she discovered her removal only after reading about the film’s shooting in newspapers. The incident happened during the making of the 1981 horror film Mangalsutra, which originally cast both Rekha and Aruna Irani in prominent roles. According to Aruna, after signing the film, she waited for the production team to contact her regarding shooting dates, but she never received any communication.

She later learned through media reports that filming had already begun without her. Speaking about the incident, Aruna Irani said she was shocked and deeply hurt that no one from the production team informed her about her removal. After the film’s release, Aruna Irani confronted director Vijay about why she had been replaced. That’s when she received an unexpected answer. According to Aruna, the director told her that Rekha had asked the producers to replace her.

Initially, Aruna refused to believe it, considering Rekha one of her closest friends. However, when she later spoke to Rekha directly, the actress reportedly admitted to making the request. Aruna revealed that Rekha told her the role given to Aruna was emotionally powerful and could overshadow Rekha’s character. Rekha allegedly feared that Aruna’s strong performance might make her own character appear negative or less impactful.

As a result, she suggested casting an actress known for vamp roles instead. The role eventually went to Prema Narayan, who was popular for playing bold and vamp characters. Released in 1981, Mangalsutra starred Rekha, Prema Narayan, Anant Nag, Rajendra Nath, and Om Shivpuri. The film revolved around a supernatural storyline involving possession and revenge. Rekha played Gayatri, a woman who discovers a ghost seeking vengeance through her husband’s body.
